Ernst & Young Nominate Sentara For
Computerworld
Smithsonian Award
Sentara
Submits
MEDai As Outstanding Project
Orlando, FL – The Sentara Health System, Norfolk, Virginia has been nominated by Ernst &
Young for the Computerworld Smithsonian Award. Sentara submitted a
project entitled "Clinical Care Improvement Using Artificial Intelligence
Assisted Disease Analysis" which was the result of a joint development with
MEDai, Inc. of Orlando, Florida. The project tightly integrated artificial
intelligence assisted software and clinical optimization concepts to evaluate
medical care delivery by identifying opportunities for care improvement,
avoiding death and disability, and decreasing costs.
The Clinical Decision Support System software (CDSS) allowed Sentara
managers and physicians to analyze current care capabilities in selected
disease processes. Since the financial data was not designed to analyze care
processes, MEDai developed a sophisticated data cleansing, tagging, and
severity adjustment system utilizing neural networks (artificial intelligence).
The highly successful project resulted in million dollar savings through
improvements in care, quality and diminished suffering.
Benefits which resulted from the partnership were: Stroke complications
were avoided or minimized. Health care cost avoidance of more than $2,000
per patient. Assurance that patients received medication appropriate for their
disease. Elimination of unnecessary steps for some surgical procedures.
A unique aspect of this project was the superiority of AI methodologies for
adjusting for patient differences. This method permits the separation of
changes in process and structure from patient differences, both of which
result in changes in outcomes.
