MEDai, Inc. and Sentara Healthcare, Secure Second Place
in 2002 KDD Cup for Predictive Modeling Work

Orlando, FL (July 2002) – MEDai, Inc. announced that David Vogel, Senior AI Specialist for the company along with Dr. Randy Axelrod, Executive of Sentara Healthcare, a long time client of MEDai, Inc., placed second in the prestigious KDD Cup 2002 competition. This is a most covetous and sought after award by those involved in modeling, predicting and data mining. MEDai, Inc. and Sentara Healthcare were recognized at the 8th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, held earlier this July in Canada. MEDai, who received honorable mention recognition for their work during the 2001 KDD Cup competition, teamed up with Sentara Healthcare to complete the task assigned by the KDD, which focused on learning models that characterize the behavior of individual genes in a hidden experimental setting, predicting the response of test instances. Co-chaired by representatives from the University of Wisconsin and The Mitre Corporation, there were hundreds of contestants in this year’s event from domestic and foreign universities and major corporations from throughout the world.

According to Dr. Axelrod, “Having worked with MEDai’s MITCH (Multiple Intelligent Tasking Computer Heuristics) engine for some time now, I continue to be impressed with the accuracy and flexibility of this powerful tool.” He added, “It has produced even better results in its healthcare application, since they have had many years to fine tune the model.” “The KDD Cup is the Holy Grail to the organizations serious about making accurate predictions,” said Steve Epstein, President, CEO and co-founder of MEDai, Inc. He continued, “Once again we have proven that our technology is solid and our ability to provide accurate predictions ranks with the best worldwide.” Mr. Epstein added, “We are very proud of this accomplishment by David and Dr. Axelrod.”
